OPINION: Scam of the ages

Ice will melt and polar bears will die. Humans are destroying the planet, global warming is the bomb, and it's getting so hot that members of Congress couldn't bother to read the massive Waxman-Markey pork bill that will save us by controlling CO2.

Before passage of the bill Friday, President Barack Obama told House members the need for passage was "urgent."

It was urgent, all right. That's because catastrophic global warming theory appears more fraudulent by the day, and without a global warming crisis the government can't sell this oppressive tax on prosperity.

On the day the Waxman-Markey bill passed, the Competitive Enterprise Institute announced the release of an EPA study that had been suppressed. The report soundly debunks the theory of the United Nations' International Panel on Climate Control, which has convinced much of the world that a variety of so-called greenhouse gases and CO2 cause global warming. The institute has obtained internal EPA e-mails that indicate the report was kept secret in the interest of supporting Obama's CO2 agenda.

The report's executive summary lists seven scientific facts that make the IPCC's global warming theory impossible to believe, including the fact empirical satellite data show our planet has cooled since 1998. The report summarizes: "Any one of these failings should be enough to invalidate the hypothesis; the breadth of these failings leaves no other possible conclusion based on current data." The EPA report recommends abandoning or revising global warming theory.

Meanwhile, a prominent Boulder scientist insists the federal government's new report, "Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States," misused his findings in order to say global warming will cost society by increasing the intensity and frequency of catastrophic weather events. The Obama administration released the report a week before urging Congress to pass Waxman-Markey.

Robert Pielke Jr., is a professor in the University of Colorado's Environmental Studies Program and former director of the University's Center for Science and Technology Policy Research. Pielke has spent his career researching catastrophic weather. He wanted to be the scientist who would find fame and fortune by proving global warming has increased the intensity and frequency of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other severe weather events.

In his years of study, during which peer-reviewed science journals published his findings, Pielke found the costs of catastrophic weather are escalating rapidly. What he hasn't proved, and has disproved, is a link between the escalating costs and global warming.
To prove global warming was escalating costs of catastrophic storms, Pielke had to correct for other factors that would contribute to the escalation. One major contributor is the proliferation of pricey homes and resorts along the coastlines.
"In dozens of studies we have found that when we adjust for monetary inflation and greater populations and wealth, there is not an upward change in the cost of catastrophic weather events," Pielke said. "Others have replicated our studies and confirmed this. There is no room left for the effect of greenhouse gasses and climate change after we adjust for human factors. The science doesn't support it."

Pielke said the government report misused his findings to argue human-caused global warming is, in fact, escalating the costs of catastrophic weather.

"The report ignored the research I've conducted and published in peer-reviewed literature, and it cited my research to support statements that are completely opposite of what I have found," Pielke told The Gazette. "It's deeply disturbing. How can we trust a process that results in such significant misstatements about my work?"

The secret EPA report, which debunks global warming, mentioned results of a study initiated by Pielke's father, Robert Pielke Sr. He's the former Colorado state climatologist who initiated a survey of 860 of the country's 1,221 ground temperature monitoring stations. The stations provide data for the discredited computer modeling used by the IPCC to support global warming theory. The survey found 89 percent of the stations "fail to meet the National Weather Service's own siting requirements" that they be at least 100 feet from heat sources. Some were found near air-conditioning exhausts, others near hot asphalt, and a few on hot black rooftops.

Pielke Sr., was invited by the IPCC to review several chapters of its initial global warming reports, in 1992 and '95, and says all of his critical comments were ignored.

"I finally told them this was not science, and I quit," the senior Pielke said. "Their conclusions were pre-determined, and they were interested only in confirmation."

He's not the only scientist involved with the IPCC's global warming research who's balking. Last year 650 scientists, several of whom were involved with the IPCC's global warming research, signed a document to discredit global warming theory.

"When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists," said Japanese scientist Kiminori Ito, an environmental physical chemist who served on the IPCC, as quoted in a U.S. Senate minority report.

Americans are starting to feel deceived and scientists are speaking out. That's why proponents of a costly global warming pork bill are in such a rush.
