Global cooling, warming alarms overdone

Regarding the guest column in your Opinion section May 3 by Victor Reilly ("Global warming is real and must be addressed"): I am reminded of the alarmist views of climate change in 1975.

We were told by numbers of "scientists" that there was to be a catastrophic cooling of our climate, and that by the year 2000 our growing season would be so short we would not be able to grow enough food to feed our people. This was reported in the media a number of times.

Even though The New York Times and others pushed the idea, it never really caught on with the public. We weren't as politically correct in those days, and there was no "Al Gore" on the scene.

In the May 4 issue of National Review , there was a prepared statement of opinion by the Cato Institute, the nonprofit public policy think tank, and signed by numerous scientists from the world over. Their opinion is that "the case of alarm regarding climate change is grossly overstated."
