POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Al Gore misleads about global warming

Al Gore is back in town and continues to mislead us. Oh, it’s not that there is no truth in what he says; it’s his failure to tell the rest of the story.

He likes to say that the science is in and that a consensus of scientists concur that we are experiencing major and devastating human-induced global warming. Yes, most scientists agree that we can expect a 1-2 degree Fahrenheit increase in the next 100 years.

However, a large and growing number of scientists do not agree that the increase is human-induced and many scientists expect that even with the mild temperature change predicted, the benefits will outweigh any adverse effects.

He likes to tell us, “Temperatures are rising more rapidly.” He didn’t mention that a recent Goddard Institute study reported that 2008 was the coolest year since 2000. He likes to tell us, “The ice is melting more rapidly.” He chooses not to tell us that the Antarctic is stable and actually two degrees colder.

He likes to tell us that the polar bear population is becoming extinct. He doesn’t mention that 11 of 13 Canadian polar bear populations are stable and/or growing. More and more mainstream economists say the enormous costs associated with proposed legislation will generate negligible effects on temperature change.Mr. Gore is extremely anxious to enact restrictive laws immediately.

I expect his anxiety is caused more by the growing number of skeptics than by his global warming concerns.
